This class is held in person and is limited to 6 participants + the instructor. Sign up early to save your seat. This class will be taught in three 2-hour sessions on June 17, June 24, and July 8.  You must attend the first session to attend the second and third.

The tuition fee includes:

Learn how to hand-carve a wooden spoon.  From simple to ornate, spoons have been made this way for hundreds of years across many different cultures.

During three 2-hour sessions you’ll learn:

  • Good spoon design
  • Proper knife techniques and safety
  • Sharpening, honing and stropping
  • Finishing and maintaining your spoon

The first hour of each session will include a lecture and demo, and the second hour will be devoted to supervised hands-on carving. Included in the tuition fee is a hook knife, sloyd knife, and a spoon blank (piece of wood) with most of the roughing out completed.  Additional spoon blanks will be available for purchase.

Your instructor, Neil Silins, has been carving spoons for about six years. He has also restored antiques, sculpted in wood and made cabinets for pleasure. Working wood with hand tools is a very different experience from the usual machine tool approach, and carving spoons seems to be almost addictive.

Tuition: $60 for all sessions  (includes two knives for you to keep and a wooden blank)
